Lost a Clear Aligner Away From Home? What to Do

The TrayJourney Team

If you lose a clear aligner away from home, contact your treatment provider promptly with the tray number and time it went missing, and ask what to wear before changing trays yourself. Search the place you last removed it, but send the message while you search rather than waiting until you return home.

The American Association of Orthodontists explains that aligners follow a particular sequence and that your orthodontist should advise you after a loss. A travel interruption does not give you a new tray schedule.

This guide helps you gather the details, ask useful questions, and keep a record while you are away. For the wider logging routine, see our clear aligner tracking guide. TrayJourney is a tracking companion, not medical advice. Always follow your provider's plan.

Start with these four steps

  1. Check the last removal spot. Look in your case, bag, hotel bathroom, and the place where you last ate. If you left a restaurant or hotel, contact its staff and ask whether a tray or case was found.
  2. Contact your provider. Use the office's usual phone number or patient contact channel. Tell them you are away and whether one tray or the whole pair is missing.
  3. List what you have with you. Note the missing tray number, any remaining tray, and whether previous or next sets are available. Having another set with you does not establish that you should wear it.
  4. Ask for wear and replacement instructions. Your provider decides which tray, if any, to wear while you wait and whether your treatment schedule needs to change.

Keep any remaining aligner in its case when it is out. Do not independently move forward, go back, or combine trays from different sets. If you already have written instructions for a lost tray, refer to those and tell your provider what happened.

Send a message your provider can act on

Your provider needs more than “I lost my aligners.” Gather these details before calling or include them in your first message:

  • Whether the upper tray, lower tray, or both are missing.
  • The tray number, using the labeled packet or your treatment record if needed.
  • The date you started that set and when you last remember wearing it.
  • Whether you have the previous set, next set, or neither with you.
  • Whether a remaining or recovered tray has visible damage or feels different.
  • Where you are staying, when you leave, and how the office can reach you.

If you do not know an exact time, say that it is an estimate. Do not delay contacting the office because your record is incomplete.

You can adapt this message in your provider's usual private contact channel:

I am away from home and have lost my [upper/lower/both] aligner from set [number]. I started this set on [date] and last remember wearing it at about [time and local time zone]. I have [list the trays available]. I return on [date]. What should I wear while waiting, do I need a replacement, and does my next change date need to move?

This is a message template, not an in-app sharing feature. TrayJourney does not send your record to your provider for you.

Ask about replacement logistics before you move on

If your provider recommends a replacement, ask how it will reach you. Do not assume that a tray can arrive before your next hotel checkout or that a nearby practice can supply the same set.

Useful questions include:

  • Can the replacement be sent to where I am staying, or should someone collect it at home?
  • Does the office need anything from me before ordering it?
  • What arrival estimate can the office confirm?
  • What should I do if I move to another location before it arrives?
  • What should I wear until then, and when should I contact the office again?

Give the delivery address through the office's normal private channel. If you are changing accommodation, confirm the dates before arranging delivery. Replacement availability and timing depend on your provider and treatment; this guide cannot promise either.

What if the office is closed?

Check the office voicemail or website for its stated after-hours contact process. Leave the tray details and a callback method through the channel it provides. Refer to any lost-aligner instructions you were given at the start of treatment.

An online article cannot choose a temporary tray for you. Avoid using someone else's experience, a timer total, or how tight another tray feels as permission to change your sequence. Tell your provider if you have already tried a different set so they have an accurate account.

If you also have an injury or another urgent dental concern, seek appropriate local dental care rather than waiting for a routine reply about a replacement.

If you find the missing tray

Finding it does not answer every question about using it again. Tell your provider if it has been exposed to heat, looks damaged, or feels different. Ask how to handle a tray recovered from an unclean place before putting it back in your mouth.

Do not boil it, reshape it, or force it into place. Use the cleaning instructions supplied for your aligners; our clear aligner cleaning guide provides general care context. A tray's appearance alone cannot confirm its fit or condition.

If your provider has already given you a revised plan, let them know you found the tray before changing that plan again.

Record the interruption without rewriting your history

Write down when the tray went missing, which trays were affected, and the instructions you received. If you are using a wear timer, check that it has not continued recording a missing tray as worn. Correct forgotten entries using what you remember and keep uncertain times labeled as estimates in your own notes.

If only one tray is missing, describe that in the message to your provider. A single daily total does not explain which tray you had available.

TrayJourney's default daily goal is 22 hours; set it to the goal your provider gives you. That goal is a logging reference, not a rule for deciding how to make up a travel interruption. Ask your provider whether your next tray-change date needs to move.

For practical logging steps, see tracking aligner wear time. TrayJourney is free to download; Journey Pro unlocks tracking. Journey Pro offers monthly, annual or one-time lifetime access. A one-time 24-hour preview needs no payment method. Eligible monthly and annual subscriptions may include a seven-day trial; lifetime access has no trial. Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled. Outside active access, Profile remains available while Home, Progress and Appointments are protected. Read the current store purchase screen before starting a subscription.

Before your next trip

Ask your provider which labeled sets to bring and what to do if another tray is lost. Keep the office's contact details with your travel information and put your case in the bag you carry to meals. Our aligner storage guide covers everyday case habits; this guide covers the interruption after something goes missing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch to the next tray if I lose one?

Ask your provider first. The correct response depends on your treatment plan. Do not use the date on a calendar or the fit of another tray to make that decision independently.

What if I lose only the upper or lower aligner?

Tell your provider exactly which one is missing and ask what to do with the remaining tray. Do not assume you should change both trays or mix different set numbers.

Will losing an aligner delay treatment?

Your provider can assess that for your case. Record the interruption and ask whether the replacement or revised wear instructions change your next tray date. A tracker cannot predict the effect on your treatment.
