Aligner tracker app privacy: six checks

The TrayJourney Team

Before choosing an aligner tracker app, record what its store disclosures and privacy policy say about your account, photos, data use, permissions, deletion and changing phones—and mark anything they do not answer as unknown.

Your wear log can describe your daily routine, and progress photos can show your face or teeth. Decide what you want to record before uploading it. This checklist gives you a place to keep the answers and their sources. It does not audit an app's security or rank apps by safety.

For the daily tracking basics, read our clear aligner tracking guide. For other selection criteria, see our guide to choosing an aligner tracking app.

Start with the right store and policy

On an iPhone app's App Store page, find App Privacy. Apple says developers supply this information themselves. It describes data collection, whether data is linked to you, and whether data is used for tracking. In this context, tracking concerns cross-company advertising or data-broker use; it does not mean timing how long you wear your aligners. Read Apple's explanation of App Privacy.

On Google Play, open the app's listing and find Data safety, then See details. Read the developer's collection and sharing disclosures alongside the linked privacy policy. Google's definitions include exceptions, such as some transfers to service providers, so a disclosure of no sharing does not establish that data stays on your phone. Read Google's explanation of Data safety.

Use the listing for your store and country. Save its URL and the date you checked it. Apple and Google use different definitions; do not treat matching labels as a complete comparison.

Copy this six-question privacy evidence sheet

Copy the sheet into your own notes. It is a blank editorial worksheet, not a feature inside an app. Use the same fields for every question so you can distinguish a disclosed answer from your own preference.

App name: __________ Store and country: __________

1. Do I need an account, and where is my wear log stored?

Check what sign-in requires and whether the developer describes on-device storage, account storage or cloud sync. If the location of your wear records is unclear, ask specifically about those records.

  • Source URL, store and country: __________
  • Date checked: __________
  • Disclosed answer: __________
  • Unknown or question for the developer: __________
  • My preference: __________

2. Where do my progress photos go?

Look for an explicit explanation of photo storage and uploads. An account-private photo can still be stored in the cloud. Ask whether photos remain on the device, sync to cloud storage, or are sent to anyone else; these are separate questions.

  • Source URL, store and country: __________
  • Date checked: __________
  • Disclosed answer: __________
  • Unknown or question for the developer: __________
  • My preference: __________

3. What data is collected or shared, and for what purpose?

Read the categories and purposes in the store disclosure, then look for detail in the policy. Keep the store's definitions beside your answer. Record an unanswered question about service providers or another recipient rather than interpreting a short label as a complete data-flow description.

  • Source URL, store and country: __________
  • Date checked: __________
  • Disclosed answer: __________
  • Unknown or question for the developer: __________
  • My preference: __________

4. Which permissions are optional?

Look for explanations of permissions used for tasks such as taking photos or receiving notifications. Ask which features remain usable if you decline a permission. Do not grant a permission just to complete this sheet.

  • Source URL, store and country: __________
  • Date checked: __________
  • Disclosed answer: __________
  • Unknown or question for the developer: __________
  • My preference: __________

5. What does the developer say about deletion and retention?

Find the instructions for requesting account or record deletion. Ask what the request covers, how long processing takes, and whether any records or backups are retained. Do not assume removing the app answers these questions. Leave timing or scope unknown unless a source states it.

  • Source URL, store and country: __________
  • Date checked: __________
  • Disclosed answer: __________
  • Unknown or question for the developer: __________
  • My preference: __________

6. What happens to my records when I change phones?

Look for the stated process for accessing existing wear logs and photos on a replacement phone. Ask separately about moving between iPhone and Android. A statement that photos sync to the cloud does not, by itself, explain the steps or guarantee that every record will be available.

  • Source URL, store and country: __________
  • Date checked: __________
  • Disclosed answer: __________
  • Unknown or question for the developer: __________
  • My preference: __________

If the sources disagree or leave something out

Keep both source URLs and their dates. Check that they refer to the same app, store and country, then send the developer one specific question. For example: “Your store page and policy leave me unsure where progress photos are stored. Do photos stay on my phone or upload to cloud storage?”

An unanswered question is a gap in your evidence. It does not establish that an app is unsafe or that a protection does not exist. Decide whether you need an answer before recording that information, and recheck sources when your needs or the app's disclosures change.

A TrayJourney example: private photos still sync to cloud storage

TrayJourney is our clear-aligner tracker app. Its wear log and photos are private to your account by default. Progress photos sync to your private cloud storage. You can choose to show them to your provider at a visit; the app does not send them to your provider.

Those statements answer part of the account and photo questions. They do not establish deletion timing, backup retention, every data recipient or the steps for changing phones. Check the TrayJourney privacy policy and ask about anything it leaves unanswered for your needs.

Wear tracking starts and stops when you tap the timer. The default daily goal is 22 hours, adjustable to your provider's plan. Privacy preferences are one part of choosing a tracker; they do not establish treatment quality. TrayJourney is a tracking companion, not medical advice. Always follow your provider's plan.

See TrayJourney features and access terms before deciding. TrayJourney is free to download. Journey Pro unlocks wear tracking, tray history, photos, appointments and aligners-out nudges through a monthly or annual subscription, or a one-time lifetime purchase. Monthly and annual subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled and may include a 7-day trial for eligible customers. The lifetime purchase has no trial. A one-time 24-hour preview needs no payment method.

Frequently asked questions

Does “private to my account” mean photos stay only on my phone?

No. Account privacy and storage location describe different things. TrayJourney's photos are private to your account by default and sync to private cloud storage. Check each app's own explanation before assuming the same arrangement.

Can I use store labels alone to choose an aligner tracker?

Use them as a starting point, then read the linked policy and ask about unanswered questions. Keep the store, country, source URL and date with each answer. This sheet records what is disclosed; it does not certify security or recommend a winner.
